Spotlight: Daniel Caesar

Ashton Simmonds, also known by his stage name Daniel Caesar, is one of the industry’s newest artists. “Praise Break” and “Pilgrim’s Paradise”, his two EPs back in 2014 and 2015, respectively, earned him critical appraisal. It wasn’t until long ago that I first listened to one of his songs, “Best Part”, which features H.E.R, and was instantly hypnotized by the song’s spellbinding melody. The song was beautiful in its simplicity. I liked it because it didn’t try too hard to be memorable, but it still was. It’s the equivalent of a rainy Sunday morning, cold and under a blanket in bed.

Needless to say, his work has been noticed by top critics. He’s been a Grammy 2018 nominee for “Get You (with Kali Uchis)” for Best R&B Performance, as well as with Freudian for Best R&B Album. Rolling Stone magazine also ranked “Praise Break” as number 19 for “20 Best R&B Albums of 2014”.

Be warned, though: his voice might remind you of Frank Ocean’s. They are not the same artist though.

  • Frank Ocean (you guessed it)
  • SZA
  • H.E.R
